Friendster was bought for $40 million by the Malaysian company MOL Global in 2009. The new owners say as part of the drive to “improve” the website, they have announced that they will be deleting pictures, saved messages and everything except the profile and friend list come the 31st of May.
The website has sent messages to the users and urged them to use the Friendster Exporter App to export their profile contents to another site before the deadline.
The company released a statement about how the website is going to work after the changes. The statement said that, “There will be new features that will leverage on your online activities and will enable you to connect with friends or engage new friends with similar interests.”
Friendster was launched in 2002. It was highly successful especially in the Asian region but the introduction of Facebook changed everything. The website was struggling until MOL acquired it in 2009.
