Mark Zuckerberg Sep 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Facebook, the social networking site is currently down. Dutch based BNO News is reporting that the site is offline due to “technical fault”.

On attempting to access the website, most of the times the request times out, occasionally it loads a blank page, and very rarely do the actual pages open.

Users have taken up to twitter to complain about the outage.

The facebook blog at http://blog.facebook.com/ gives a HTTP 500 error indicating problems at the server with the message :-

“Sorry, an error has occurred.
We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”

Profile pages themselves return HTTP 200 status, but the page is blank.

Other websites which embed Facebook widgets such as like buttons, etc also appeared to be timing out due to Facebook’s failure.

Some interesting rants:-

@JalenJade : BREAKING NEWS! FACEBOOK is down. Productivity tanks as users suffer withdrawal symptoms and millions of “F5″ keys to be replaced.

@csmonitor : #Zuckerberg donates $100 million and Facebook breaks down. Classic irony.

@Fake_Dispatch : BREAKING WORK TIP: Do not be the first one in your office to announce that Facebook is down.

Facebook recently passed Google in the total amount of time spent online.

It is recommended that users keep their calm, and use services such as Twitter to reduce withdrawal symptoms.

As of press time there has been no official communication from Facebook about the outage.
