Google China Beijing, July 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Google’s right to operate in China has been renewed by the authorities for at least another year, according to a statement released by the search engine.

Google has been at loggerheads with the Chinese government for a couple of months over censorship issues. Some subjects that are searched in China are automatically censored by Google, but the company said it was no longer going to censor those search results. The conflict nearly led the search engine being forced out of the Chinese market in June.

The license got renewed after Google decided to redirect searches from mainland China to its Hong Kong website, which is not censored. The Chinese government wasn’t entire pleased with this idea and last month, the search engine decided to place an extra search box on its Chinese website, which directs to the Hong Kong website when clicked on by users.

Google’s compromise with the Chinese government seems to have worked wonders and now the company can operate in the communist country. Google said it was “pleased” that the Chinese government has renewed its license.

According to Reuters, Edward Yu of Analysys International said that, “In China, it is very common that you need to give the government face if you want to do business here. The double-click rule (so as not to automatically reroute searches) shows that Google can compromise and give them face.”
