SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) – A citizen of British Columbia, Canada was arrested at the U.S./Canada border crossing at Point Roberts, Washington for a criminal complaint with mail fraud in connection with the operation of more than 200 web sites offering “executive dating” services, prosecutors announced on Monday.

Barrie Turner, 65, is the owner of Executive Dating LLC, a company which offered online dating services through various linked websites such as Executive Catholic Dating, Executive Gay Dating and Executive Seattle Dating.

Turner allegedly accepted payment from customers, but didn’t provide any legitimate matchmaking services. More than 100 people filed consumer complaints about Executive Dating. The customers said that after paying as much as $997 for a six month membership, they were matched with fictitious people.

Most of the clients received the same “match” profile and when they attempted to date this person, the system replayed that the person had chosen to date someone else. The subscription fees were sent to a mail box in Point Roberts, a small peninsula just south of the Canadian Border. Investigators estimate that since 2005, customers have mailed or wired payments totaling more than $1.2 million to Executive Dating LLC.

Turner faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, if convicted of the mail fraud charge.
