Jan 21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A coalition of environmentalist groups in China have accused Cupertino based technology giant Apple Inc of neglecting its suppliers damaging the environment and violating safety issues. The Chinese Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs has published a report and accused Apple Inc of ignoring the issue. According to the complaint the negligence on part of the company has led to poisoning of several of its factory workers. This comes at a time when Apple is basking in the glory of the massive sales enjoyed by its products like iPad and iPhone worldwide. It has earlier been accused of the high price of its products and hush-hush supply chain management system in China where the major manufacturers of its products are based in.
The Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs spokesperson Ma Jun said that “We’ve found that Apple isn’t honoring its commitment in ensuring its supply chain’s work safety and environmental responsibility and giving dignity and respect to the workers.” Three other green groups have also complained against Apple on this issue. The complaint also says that Apple is very careful about the product quality and pricing but turns a blind eye towards environmental and social responsibility related factors.
Most of Apple’s products are assembled in China by Foxconn. The company was hit by a spree of employee suicides last year reportedly caused by harsh factory conditions and unfriendly setup. Steve Jobs the CEO of Apple however has rubbished the allegation. The green groups also said that compared to other companies that get their products made in China Apple lags in supplier work conditions.
