Mayawati

MayawatiMayawati Kumari is an Indian politician who serves as the current chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. She was born in 1956 to a minor government official Prabhu Das and his wife Ram Rati, both of who belonged to the Dalit community, the former untouchable class of the Hindu hierarchy. She has been in active politics for over two decades and has been the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in three short tenures before the current term.

Mayawati has faced corruption charges from time to time as the head of the Bahujan Samaj Party. While she was serving as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2002-03, she was involved in the Taj Corridor Case. She was also involved in an embezzlement case leading to her coming under the CBI scanner for her personal wealth. It is also said that every year on her birthday, the members of BSP extort money from businessmen and other wealthy people to fill the party coffers as well as to raise their personal bank balances. The opposition party blamed Mayawati for the murder of a PWD engineer who had refused to pay for her birthday festivities.
