Sachin Tendulkar New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) India’s pace spearhead Zaheer Khan and S. Sreesanth have been ruled out of the Test series against the West Indies with injuries.

“Zaheer has a right ankle problem while Sreesanth has a right elbow problem. Both players will require some time off for rehabilitation,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement Friday.

Abhimanyu Mithun and Praveen Kumar have been named as their replacements in the Test squad.

India will play three Tests against West Indies starting June 20 after the five ODIs.

India’s batting was already depleted with the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag.

Sehwag and Gambhir were ruled out becuase of shoulder injuries. The absence of two expereineced openers forced the selectors to pick up Murali Vijay and the uncapped Abhinav Mukund, both from Tamil Nadu.

Tendulkar was rested for the entire series as he wanted to spend some time with his family.

The bowling, too, will not be at full strength now with the absence of Zaheer and Sreesanth, who performed well in the Test series against South Africa.

Zaheer opted out of the ODIs but was expected to lead the attack in the Tests.

Immediately after the West Indies tour, India will travel to England for five ODIs and four Tests.
