Mumbai, April 2 (IANS) Yuvraj Singh dismissed Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, breaking his crucial partnership with Mahela Jayawardene that was taking a threatening shape in the World Cup final against India here Saturday.
After 30 overs, Sri Lanka were 132 for three with Jayawardene (34) and Thilan Samaraweera (9) at the crase.
Yuvraj gave India its third wicket (27.5 overs) when he had Sangakkara (48), caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni while trying to cut the bowler.
Sangakkara and Jayawardene forged a 62-run partnership after Sri Lanka were 2/60.
Harbhajan Singh removed dangerous Tillakaratne Dilshan (33).
Dilshan, who is the top-scorer of the tournament, tried to sweep Harbhajan but the ball brushed his gloves and hit his thigh before rattling the stumps. Dilshan played 49 balls and hit three fours.
Seasoned seamer Zaheer Khan led India to a sound start by maintaining a steady line and length and bowled back-to-back maidens in his first three overs as openers Upul Tharanga and Dilshan found it hard to get him away as the Indian fielders also showed lot of agility on the ground.
Tharanga, who semed lacklustre, edged an away going delivery and Virender Sehwag threw himself on to the ground to lap up the low catch in Zaheer’s fourth over. A deafening roar greeted the fall of the first Sri Lankan wicket.
Sangakkara and Dilshan then put on 43 runs for the second wicket.
