Adelaide, Feb.19 (ANI): Out of form Yuvraj Singh and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today powered India to a nail-biting two-wicket win against Sri Lanka in a Commonwealth Bank-sponsored one-day match here.
Yuvraj, who in the recent past has been questioned for his lack of application and participation in team strategy, smashed a glorious 76 of 70 balls with 10 fours and a six. Dhoni, known for his clearing the fence ways, scored a boundary-less unbeaten 50 of 68 balls. Irfan Pathan chipped in with a useful 31 with four boundaries.
Replying to Sri Lanka’s score of 238 for 6, India scored 239 for 8.
The highlight of the Sri Lankan innings was an efficient 128 by wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara and 71 by skipper Mahela Jayawardene. Yuvraj departed with 81 still required and five wickets in hand, but the captain Dhoni fought off leg problems, a sore finger and a swallowed fly to see them home. There were some late jitters as Irfan Pathan threw his wicket away, Praveen Kumar was caught hooking and Harbhajan Singh was trapped by Lasith Malinga’s inswinging yorker, but Sri Lanka had left their final run too late.
It was an impressive result for India, who had crashed to 3 for 35 after their chase began. (ANI)
