Yuki, Arjun win silver for India (Lead)
August 21st, 2010 - 10:04 pm ICT by IANSSingapore, Aug 21 (IANS) India’s tennis sensation Yuki Bhambri and discus thrower Arjun won a silver each to take the country’s medals tally to five at the Youth Olympics here Saturday.
Yuki had to be content with a silver as he had to retire while trailing 1-4 in the deciding set after suffering cramps against Juan Sebastian Gomez of Colombia in the boys singles final. The first two sets were decided in tie-breaks and the final scoreline 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 4-1 went in favour of the Colombian.
Arjun made history later in the day as he became the first Indian to win a medal in athletics at the Youth Olympics. Arjun finished second with a throw of 62.52m to win the silver. Jacques Du Plessis of South Africa won the gold with a throw of 63.94 metres.
Yuki, who has been in impressive form in the tournament, was unfortunate as cramps got the better of him.
“It was unfortunate I had to retire like this in a final. I want to thank the Indian fans who supported me throughout the tournament. I will have to be satisfied with the silver this time around. Maybe next time, I can win the gold,” said Yuki.
India’s medals tally swelled to five.
Indian wrestlers Pooja Dhanda (60 kg) and Satyawart Kadian (100 kg) won silver and bronze medals while H.S. Prannoy won silver in boys badminton singles.
India was assured of another medal in boxing. Vikas Krishnan defeated Hrayr Matevosyan of Armenia with a final score of 7:2 pts and moved into the medal round at the International convention centre.
The boys basketball team finally managed a victory after three straight losses. They beat Panama 28-22.
It was a forgettable day for the table tennis team as Avik Das and Mallika Bhandarkar lost their first round matches.
