Younis’ future to be decided during Butt-Afridi’s one-on-meeting on Monday
August 22nd, 2010 - 2:11 pm ICT by ANIKarachi, Aug.22 (ANI): Uncertainty still persists over the inclusion of former captain Younis Khan into the national team, as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has summoned one-day captain Shahid Afridi for a meeting on Monday (August 13) to decide on the veteran batsman’s future.PCB insiders said that Butt has called Afridi for a one-on-one meeting to discuss the team set up for the upcoming five one-day matches and two T20s against England, starting September 5.
“There are clear indications that in the meeting it will be decided if Younis should be considered for the ODI series in England,” The Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.
However, Iqbal Mohammad Ali, who heads the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports, said Butt, who was earlier against including Younis in the national squad, has changed his stance.
“Ijaz appeared to have changed his stance on Younis and indications are that he should be back in the team soon,” Ali said.
Sources said that Butt has been under tremendous pressure from various quarters for not allowing selectors to pick the veteran batsman for the England tour despite him having a fairly good record there.
Both Younis and Mohammed Yousuf were slapped hefty fines and banned for an indefinite period by the PCB following the disastrous Australia tour earlier this year.
While Younis appealed against the ban in the PCB’s appellate tribunal and subsequently got it removed, Yousuf decided to retire from international cricket in protest against the punishment.
However, the PCB chief later allowed Yousuf to be selected in the national squad, but insisted on an apology from Younis for remarks he and his lawyer made against the board during the appellate tribunal’s hearing. (ANI)
