Younis’ captaincy faces turbulence with section of players not willing to play under him
October 21st, 2009 - 2:56 pm ICT by ANILahore, Oct.21 (ANI): Following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to reject Younis Khan’s resignation and appoint him captain till the 2011 World Cup, it was believed that all controversies have been laid to rest, but it appears that the board’s decision may well have sparked-off yet another storm in Pakistan cricket.
A section of Pakistani cricketers are reportedly miffed at the PCB’s decision to retain Khan, and board insiders said some of the players have made it clear that they do not want Khan to continue as the skipper of the national squad.
According to sources, shortly after the team returned from South Africa, some players led by vice-captain Shahid Afridi met PCB chief Ijaz Butt and made it clear that they would not play under Khan.
The cricketers said they had a problem with Khan’s attitude and domineering behavior.
“Younis was aware of what was happening behind his back with apparently the approval of manager Yawar Saeed and he played his cards right by using the match-fixing allegations to submit his resignation to Ijaz,” The Daily Times quoted sources privy to the PCB, as saying.
They said that the PCB, while retaining Khan as captain, asked him to sort out issues with the dissatisfied players.
“The players have been told to accept the fact that they have to play under Younis and the PCB will continue to support him. But at the same time Ijaz has advised Younis to work out his issues with the disgruntled players in the interest of the team,” sources said. (ANI)
