New York, Mar 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) After the star sportsman Yao Ming returned to United States with his pregnant wife Ye Li in tow, then the Chinese fans started speculating that the baby would be born in America. Yao Ming said that the birthplace of his daughter, is a private matter, and not for public consumption at all. He pleaded with his fans to lend him some space, and also added that he appreciated all the good wishes of his fans. “It’s just between me and my wife,” Yao said. “We’re excited about the new member of our family. We appreciate everyone’s good wishes. Everyone, thanks for that. I think we just need some space.”
The Chinese fans are worried because both Yao Ming and Ye Li are basketball players, and there is a good chance that their offspring would also be a star player. So if she were born in the United States, then she would automatically become an American citizen, and thus rob the Chinese national team of a future star player. However as she is born to two Chinese parents, then she can also claim Chinese citizenship, but the problem is that, China doesn’t recognize dual citizenship.
“Yao Ming is an individual, not a political tool,” was the opinion of a fan on the famous basketball Web site Hoop China. “He has the right to choose where his child is born and what kinds of medical care and education will be available to her. His child’s citizenship has nothing to do with loyalty.” “Only an idiot would pass up American citizenship,” said another fan on the website.
