New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) World Series Hockey (WSH) and the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) Monday announced cash incentives for the national team to motivate the players for the 2012 London Olympics.

The move comes when IHF has been criticised by Hockey India (HI) for throwing a spanner into India’s preparation for the Olympics.

WSH has signed up almost all the national team players and the developmental squad for their league beginning Dec 17. The league and the national team camp for the Olympic qualifiers will run simultaneously. HI has left it the players to decide on whether they want to play for the country or WSH.

WSH players who make it to the Indian team at the Olympic qualifiers will get Rs.5 lakhs each.

An additional Rs.5 lakhs will go to every WSH player in the team if India team qualifies for the London Olympics.

A gold medal will fetch Rs.2 crore, a silver Rs.1 crore and a bronze Rs.50 lakhs to be divided equally amongst all WSH players in the national team.

IHF president R.K.Shetty said the league will only help players prepare for international assignments.

“WSH provides a highly competitive domestic league for the players to be prepared to compete at International levels,” he said.

“Success at the 2012 London Olympics will be a matter of immense national pride. IHF is committed towards creating multiple opportunities for the players to excel. The incentive plan is to further motivate the players to perform at the global stage”

Yannick Colaco, Chief Operating Officer, Nimbus Sport said: “WSH is committed towards looking after the hockey players and ensuring that they are motivated to perform at the highest level.”
