Wright and Vettori to select playing eleven in World Cup
February 3rd, 2011 - 8:30 pm ICT by IANSWellington, Feb 3 (IANS) New Zealand coach John Wright is happy that he and captain Daniel Vettori have been entrusted with the responsibility to decide on the playing XI in the World Cup.Wright said the selectors, Mark Greatbatch, Glenn Turner and Lance Cairns will not be travelling with the team. Australia is one side which usually prefers to take a selector on tours.
“At the World Cup, myself, Dan Vettori and the vice-captain will pick the team. I am very comfortable with that, it is the way I have always operated,” Wright was quoted as saying by Stuff website.
The team is struggling for wins ahead of the sub-continental event, having lost home Test and One-day series against Pakistan. The Kiwis lost fifth One-day International Thursday to go down 1-3 in the six-match series with the final game scheduled for Feb 5.
Wright, who recently took up the job and is a former India coach, expects full commitment from his players.
“Winning and losing is part of the game but the public expect a team that fights. Losing (in Napier) was not much fun but I was very proud of the effort that was evident.
“From being five down to get to 260 was a good fighting rearguard action and we nearly pulled it off.”
