Port-au-Prince, July 16 (DPA) World Footballer Lionel Messi has visited earthquake victims in Haiti, the world’s childrens’ organisation Unicef said Friday.
The Argentine and Barcelona striker, who is a Unicef ambassador, visited the city Carrefour near the capital Port-au-Prince. Some 50,000 people live in homeless shelters in Carrefour and Messi said that he had never seen anything like it.

“There are few places in the world where children are facing such dangers,” he said.

Unicef offers children in Haiti sporting activities to help them pass their time.

More than 220,000 people lost their lives during the earthquake in January and more than a million in the Port-au-Prince region have no home.

The striker also visited Argentine soldiers in Haiti, who have been deployed to ensure stability in the country.

Messi arrived in Haiti from Panama, where he played in a charity match Wednesday.
