World Cup over for refs Rosetti, Larrionda
June 30th, 2010 - 12:12 am ICT by IANSJohannesburg, June 29 (DPA) Referees Jorge Larrionda and Roberto Rosetti have been dropped by football world governing body FIFA for the rest of the World Cup following blunders in their Round of 16 matches.
The FIFA Referees Committee retained Tuesday 19 of the 29 referee trios for the quarter-final stage, but both Uruguayan Larrionda and the Italian Rosetti were left out.
Larrionda officiated over England’s defeat to Germany and failed to spot Frank Lampard’s first-half shot which came off the underside of the crossbar and landed clearly beyond the goal-line.
Rosetti, who had refereed the final of Euro 2008, was in charge of the last-16 match between Argentina and Mexico, and allowed Carlos Tevez’s opening goal for Argentina to stand even though the Manchester City striker scored from an offside position.
Neither appeared at a FIFA open day for the media to meet the World Cup referees in Pretoria Tuesday.
