World Cup is not over for us: Trott
March 4th, 2011 - 9:31 pm ICT by IANSChennai, March 4 (IANS) The after-effects of England’s shocking World Cup loss to Ireland were fairly obvious as Jonathan Trott spoke at length about the need to bounce back against South Africa Sunday.
Ireland successfully chased 328 with three wickets and five balls to spare to pull off the biggest 2011 World Cup stunner. It came barely two days after England had given favourites India a run for their money by tying the match while chasing 338 runs at the same venue.
“Obviously, we should have won against Ireland, but it is not over yet. We still have three more games in the World Cup and those are winnable. It is a huge chance to perform and qualify (for the quarter-finals),” Trott said at a media interaction.
Trott scored 92 against Ireland, but a Kevin O’Brien’s fastest World Cup century overshadowed his innings.
Trott emphasised that it was best to look ahead and not back as England prepare for a key game against South Africa.
“We need to think of our performance and roles in the team and make sure your job is done. It does not help to look too much at the game we lost, but to get on with it.
“It is up to each individual and the team to perform by playing good cricket over 100 overs,” said the 29-year old South Africa-born Trott who since his ODI debut two seasons ago, has emerged as an important top-order batsman.
In the run-up to the World Cup, England were among the favourites following their Ashes win over Australia who, however, hit back by clinching the ODI series 6-1.
“We could have won a few matches in Australia and also against India and Ireland, but didn’t quite finish the games,” Trott said.
England are on three points after as many outings with one win, a tie and a defeat that has left them in a precarious position, having to play South Africa (March 6, Chennai), Bangladesh (March 11, Chittagong) and the West Indies (March 17, Chennai) in their remaining three Group B fixtures.
South Africa head the table with four points, the same as the West Indies who are in second spot on inferior Net Run Rate, followed by India on three while Ireland, a rung below England in fifth with two points, have four more games in hand.
