New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) Devendro Singh (49 kg) and Jai Bhagwan (60 kg) Monday registered convincing wins to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Three other Indian boxers Manoj Kumar (64 kg), Vikas Krishan (69 kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81 kg) have already made it to the pre-quarterfinals.

Devendro trounced Velazquez Joselito of Mexico 40:19. The 19-year-old from Manipur was on the offensive right from the start and attacked Velazquez relentlessly to force the referee to give the Mexican a standing count of eight. The Indian wrapped up the first round at 19:7.

He continued in the same vein in the second round and stretched the lead to 31:14. The final round proved to be no different with Devendro’s hard blows to the head prompting the referee to give a second standing count to the Mexican. The Indian now takes on seventh-seeded Carlos Quipo of Ecuador Tuesday.

Devendro is a product of the Sports Authority of India’s Army Boys Sports Company scheme and has learned his boxing skills at Pune’s Army Sports Institute.

In the light weight category, Jai beat Czech Republic’s Miroslav Serban 14:6.

The 26-year-old dictated the terms, leading throughout the nine minutes of play, never allowing Miroslav to settle into a rhythm. Jai’s opponent in the round of 16 will be European Championship quarter-finalist and seventh seed David Joyce of Ireland.

Akhil Kumar (56kg) will take on World No.4 John Nevin of Ireland, while Manpreet Singh (91kg) will open his campaign against Dzhakon Qurbanov of Tajikistan later Monday.

The five Indian boxers are a step away from the Olympics qualification mark as top ten boxers in each category will qualify for the London mega-event.
