Wimbledon qualifiers: Prakash falls at the final hurdleJune 18th, 2009 - 9:31 pm ICT by IANS
London, June 18 (IANS) Prakash Amritraj’s hopes of making to the Wimbledon draw were dashed by American Michael Yani 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 4-6 in the Wimbeldon final qualifying round here Thursday.
Prakash, ranked 154, would have fancied his chances against 28-year-old Yani whom he had beaten in the only meeting earlier this year and more so after he walked away with the first set without much difficulty.
However, Yani came back strongly in the second set and with a decisive break in the 12th game to make it set-all.
The American, with a break in the fourth game, jumped to a 4-1 lead in third set and with easy hold of serves nosed ahead 2-1.
In the fourth set, Yani once again broke Prakash early but this time the Indian broke back in the eighth game to make it 4-4. However, it turned out to be a temporary reprieve for Prakash as Yani pulled one back immediately and then served out the match on his third match point.
Meanwhile, India No.1 Somdev Devvarman, who made a first round exit in the singles qualifying, entered the main draw in the doubles event. Partnering South African Kevin Anderson, the pair pulled out a tight three setter 7-6 (0), 6-7 (1), 8-6 over Italian Alessandro Motti and Australian Joseph Sirianni.
