Melbourne, Jan 29(ANI): Defending champions Venus and Serena Williams thrashed top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-4 6-3 to win the Australian Open women’s doubles and their 11th Grand Slam doubles title on Friday.
It was the fourth Australian Open doubles title for the second-seeded Williams sisters, as they had claimed the doubles titles in Australia in 2001, 2003 and last year.
Venus and Serena had to face some tough games in the opening set, as Black and Huber matched them shot by shot to have the score at 4-3. The sisters then made a strong comeback and displayed their usual robust style to take the first set 6-4.
The two then broke Huber’s serve to open the second set and won the match when they again broke Huber, ending it on Serena’s winning reflex volley.
The American pair wrapped the match in 86 minutes, 50 minutes for the first set and 36 minutes for the second, and also acted as a warm-up for Serena who takes on Justine Henin in Saturday’s women’s singles final, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The victory means that sisters are now the third best women’s doubles pairing of the Open era - trailing Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver (21 Grand Slam titles) and Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva (14). (ANI)
