Will run golf club, Kerala tells court
June 15th, 2010 - 9:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 15 (IANS) The Kerala government Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it would “manage and conduct” Trivandrum Golf Club (TGC) after terminating the tie-up with the existing licencee.
The state said that after the takeover of the golf course it would be handed over to the Kerala Sports Council.
The court was also told that the state would maintain the “greenery and landscape of the 25 acre golf course”.
The golf course was set up by the Travancore Royal family in 1850.
The state told the vacation bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Deepak Verma and comprising Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan that all the 600 existing members of the club would be accommodated and allowed to play golf under the new arrangement.
The affidavit filed by Anand Kumar, resident commissioner of the government in Delhi, said that it intended to impart training to children in golf either free or on reasonable charges.
Appearing for the state, senior counsel Jaideep Gupta said that the only objective of terminating the licence of the TGC is to make golf accessible to a larger section of the city population.
The court adjourned the matter and directed it to be listed Thursday after the petitioner TGC sought time to file a reply.
