White now being seen as the face of modern Australian cricket
January 12th, 2011 - 1:59 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Jan.12 (ANI): In the eyes of the Australian selectors, the power and resourcefulness that Victoria captain Cameron White brings to the shorter forms of the game appear to have come at the expense of a technique sound enough to hold down a Test spot.
White is now being seen as the face of modern Australian cricket.
All the evidence suggests he is. With 848 runs at 44.63 - and a bullish strike rate of 84.46 - in 25 one-day internationals last calendar year, White has been Australia’s most prolific one-day batsman, Fox Sports reports.
Many good judges believe he should be holding down a spot in the Test side’s middle order, but he remains a distant speck on the selectors’ radar.
The man himself believes in the old adage that selectors do not pick sides - players do through their performances.
“I guess at times you get a little bit disappointed. It’s the selectors’ opinion and it wasn’t my turn this time around,” White said when asked about being overlooked for the Ashes.
White, 27, has had a taste of Test cricket, playing four matches in India in 2008 as a bowling all-rounder during Australia’s long and fruitless and unfinished search for a regular spinner.
These days he is rarely seen at the bowling crease, and was asked if a Test recall hinged on tightening his batting technique or bowling more to become the batting all-rounder so sought by the selectors.
“To be honest I’m not too sure,” he said. “I know that one thing you have to do is score lots of runs. So that’s probably the main focus for me. (ANI)
