Jakarta (Indonesia), Apr. 25 (ANI): Two English golfers playing on opposite sides of the globe were locked in battle to become the world No.1 on Sunday, but Lee Westwood eventually emerged on top in the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta after Luke Donald narrowly failed to win on the PGA Tour in the United States.

Westwood returned to the top of the rankings with victory at the Indonesian Masters. He held the No.1 spot for 17 weeks until Martin Kaymer of Germany replaced him in February.

Donald, who would have usurped his Ryder Cup colleague by winning the Heritage, came up short, but only just, The Guardian reports.

Tied for the lead alongside Brandt Snedeker after 72 holes at Hilton Head, the Englishman birdied the first extra hole of a play-off only to see that effort matched by his American opponent.

The pair had matching pars at the second extra hole but, with Donald failing to get up and down for par from a greenside bunker at the third extra hole, Snedeker took the win.

Westwood said: “This is my 18th or 19th year playing on Tour and I still love it. I’ve always said that when I stop loving the game, I’ll quit.” (ANI)
