West Delhi Cricket Club win first under-16 cricket tournament
October 16th, 2011 - 8:05 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) West Delhi Cricket Club won the first Amit Gupta Memorial (under-16) Cricket Tournament when they defeated L.B.Shastri Cricket Club by four wickets at the Jamia Millia Islamia sports stadium here Sunday.
L.B.Shastri were all out for 137 in 49.5 overs. Rohan Rathi (24), Aman Gurnani (22) and Vikas Dixit (21) were the main scorers. Shivank Vashist with three for 23 and Varun Malik were two for 21 were the main wicket-takers.
West Delhi made 138 for six in 45 overs to clinch victory. Mohit Kumar was the top scorer with an unbeaten 45, followed by Gaurav Shokeen (32 not out) and Rajesh Sharma (22). Rathi and Vikas Dixit picked up a wicket each. Kumar won the Man of the Match award.
Twelve top Delhi clubs and cricket academies participated in the fortnight-long tournament whose aim is to unearth and encourage cricket talent in Delhi, said Gursharan Singh, veteran Delhi coach.
Four groups of three teams each played two league matches. Two top teams from each group qualified for the semi-finals. The semi-finals were played between L.B. Shastri and R.P. Academy, and between West Delhi and Gush Cricket Club.
Former India captain Ajay Jadeja was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. He told the young players that they should not only aim high to wear India colours but also enjoy themselves while playing the game.
The tournament was sponsored by Cico Technologies Limited in memory of their founder and CMD Amit Gupta who died three years ago. Present CMD Anasuya Gupta told the young enthusiasts that her company will continue supporting the cricket tournament in order to give opportunities and exposure to talented players.
