We have to play better cricket: Dernbach
October 16th, 2011 - 9:56 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) England pacer Jade Dernbach said Sunday that the team will be looking to avoid the mistakes committed in the first ODI in Hyderabad when they face-off with India in the second ODI at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Monday.
England, who dominated the summer’s Tests and ODIs against India, suffered a crushing 124-run defeat in Hyderabad in the first ODI of the five-match series.
Dernbach said the team is disappointed with the results in Hyderabad after having a highly successful summer against India. England won the Tests 5-0 and followed it with a 3-0 victory in the ODIs.
“We just didn’t play very well on the night. It’s something we will have to try and correct. We have got four games to rectify that situation. There’s a long series ahead, we have got five games, we have got time to set it right,” Dernbach said.
The South African-born player said that playing the World Champions in their own backyard will be a challenge for any team but the confidence gained from their performance in the summer will stand in good stead for England.
“Any time you come overseas and especially in this case playing against the World Champions in their own patch is going to be a difficult task. But it’s just one of those days when things didn’t go well for us. We have to play better cricket, which we know we can like we produced back home this summer,” he said.
The 25-year-old said England batsmen’s vulnerability against spin bowling was not the only reason for loss in the first ODI.
“There are quite a few areas that we spoke about where we went wrong. I don’t think it was just in the spin department. There was a whole lot of things that we just didn’t play well. In every facet of the game, we need to get better at. We were outplayed in all three departments and if we can improve in each of those, we will have a better chance of winning those games,” he said.
Asked if sweep is the preferred option, Dernbach said: “Every individual brings a different quality to the side. We back each other 100 percent in the decisions we make and that’s the strength of our side.”
Dernbach said the England will try to get rid of India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as early as possible.
“He is a fantastic player. As a bowling unit, we just need to find a way of getting him out as is the case in any game, in any Powerplay. That’s the exciting part of the game. But we need to find a way of containing the runs, finding ways to get wickets,” he said.
