We do not want any confrontation with CGF: Kalmadi
October 23rd, 2009 - 8:01 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, says he does not want any more “confrontation” with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and would try to resolve outstanding issues in his forthcoming meeting with the CGF president Michael Fennell in London.
Kalmadi, who left for London for the Queen’s Baton Relay Oct 29, said he was hopeful that all the issues would be settled amicably.
“We don’t want any more confrontations. I will meet Mr Fennell in London and will discuss all the issues and try to sort them. I can’t tell you much but yes, we want to make sure that the Commonwealth Games are a huge success,” Kalmadi told reporters here Friday.
“OC (organising committee) vice-chairman Randhir Singh has already spoken to Mr Fennell over the phone and I will discuss the matter with him next week,” Kalmadi said.
OC had demanded Hooper’s replacement and also rejected the CGF’s recommendation of a
technical review panel to monitor the preparations in the wake of the slow pace of work.
Kalmadi had said that Hopper was an “impediment” in the functioning of the OC.
Fennell rejected both demands outright and said such a personal attack on Hooper was “unwarranted.”
Sports Minister M.S. Gill then spoke to Kalmadi and said he will have a meeting with Fennell in London.
“He (Gill) is welcome to join the meeting,” Kalmadi said.
Kalmadi introduced Jarnail Singh as the chief executive officer of the OC.
“We had asked the Cabinet Secretariat for personnel and we have been fortunate to have Mr Jarnail Singh as the Organising Committee CEO. He has served as chief secretary of Manipur. Three more members will soon join him,” he said.
Kalmadi said the staff in the CWG OC will be increased from 450 to 1,600.
“We are working as a team to ensure hosting of a successful Games,” he said.
