WC referee’s wife hopes he manages final better than his kids!
July 10th, 2010 - 12:57 pm ICT by ANILondon, July 10(ANI): British referee Howard Webb’s wife, Kay, has said that she is stunned over the prospect of her husband keeping check on two teams, as he struggles to manage his three kids.
Howard has been named by FIFA as the man in charge for Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Netherlands at Johannesburg’s Soccer City.
“I don’t know how he does it. He can’t take charge of his own children. I don’t know how he manages it on a football pitch,” The Sun quoted Kay, as saying.
Meanwhile, Howard’s father Bill said that he can’t afford to make any mistakes in the match.
A former professional referee himself, Bill will be in the stands at Soccer City eyeing his son’s performance.
“I shall be the proudest man in the world, no doubt about it, but I’ll also be Howard’s biggest critic. If he gets it wrong I’ll tell him the truth,” Bill said.
Howard, a Premier League regular, will be the first Englishman to run the final since Jack Taylor in 1974.
He is also the first referee to take charge of the World Cup and Champions League finals in the same year.
The 38-year-old will be backed by English assistants Darren Cann and Michael Mullarkey.
The trio has officiated at three games in the tournament, including finalists Spain’s shock 1-0 first-round defeat to Switzerland. (ANI)
