Waugh ready to come to the aid of ‘hammered’ Aussies
January 8th, 2011 - 9:23 pm ICT by ANISydney, Jan 8(ANI): Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has said that he would consider accepting the role of mentor to the national team.
“It’s obviously got to get the go ahead from Cricket Australia, but if they asked me, I’d be interested,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Waugh, as saying.
“I’m more interested in mentoring than coaching. I’ve done it for a number of years with the Australian Olympic team and Australian soccer team.”
“I keep in contact with a number of players in the cricket team now and I’m probably more interested in the one-on-one stuff behind the scenes. Tim Nielsen has the job as coach and recently signed on for three years, so that role seems pretty settled,” he added.
Waugh’s comment comes after England thrashed Australia by an innings and 83 runs in the fifth and final Test in Sydney on Friday to claim a 3-1 victory.
The victory gave the visitors their first Test series win in Australia since the 1986-87 tour.
It was also the first time Australia had lost three Tests at home since 1988-89, when Viv Richards’ West Indies side had won by a 3-1 margin. (ANI)
