Watson hits record 15 sixes as Aussies thrash Bangladesh in Dhaka ODI
April 11th, 2011 - 6:20 pm ICT by ANIDhaka, Apr 11(ANI): All-rounder Shane Watson belted an unbeaten 185 off 96 balls, which included 15 sixes and 15 fours, to record the highest score by an Australian in ODI history, as the Aussies thrashed Bangladesh by nine wickets in the second game at Dhaka’s Shere Bangla National Stadium today.
Chasing the 230-run target, Australia reached it in 26 overs with 144 balls remaining.
Matthew Hayden held the previous record for Australia’s top score in one-day cricket, with 181 not out against New Zealand in 2007.
Watson’s 15 sixes were also the most by any player in a one-day match, surpassing West Indian Xavier Marshall’s record of 12 sixes against Canada in 2008.
The 29-year-old also amassed the biggest proportion of runs by an individual in a team’s one-day score, with 79.7 per cent of Australia’s total, ousting West Indian legend Viv Richards’s record of 69.48 per cent, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
He also broke South African Herschelle Gibbs’ record for the most runs scored in boundaries in an ODI.
Watson smashed a total of 150 runs in boundaries beating Gibbs’s 126 runs during his innings of 175 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Unsurprisingly, Watson was named man of the match.
Australia clinched the three-match series 2-0. The third and final ODI will be played on Wednesday. (ANI)
