New York, May 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Tuesday turned out to be a memorable day for the Washington Wizards who went on to win the National Basketball Association’s draft lottery which now provides them with the privileged to have the top draft pick that would be starting on June 24. The win no doubt has come up as good news for the team which has suffered from a bad patch last year with the death of the owner Abe Pollin and then lost its leading player Gilbert Arenas who had a gun conviction.
The win of the lottery by the Washington Wizards has come as s surprise not only to them but also to the 14 other non-playoff teams that participated in the lottery. The Washington Wizards’ 26-56 in the regular season provided them with a 10.3 percent chances to make it to the top pick and it was considered as the fifth best for the lottery win. However, it seems that the luck was on their favor as they got the top pick. The worst record holder in NBA this season, the New Jersey Nets could not win the top pick and had to settle with the third pick. The second selection will go to the Philadelphia 76ers.
After the declaration was made, the exulted President of Washington Wizards Ernie Grunfeld mentioned to media sources that “it was almost disbelief when our name came up”. Ernie Grunfeld also added that the Tuesday night has been a great night for both the Washington Wizards franchise and the fans. The No. 1 pick now will provide the team with the option to select point guard John Wall of the University of Kentucky on June 24 draft.
