New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) India’s Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh outpunched Jeremy van Diemen of Australia 18-6 to reach the semifinals of the Arafura Games in Darwin.

With this win, Vijender assured himself of at least a bronze medal. Participating in his first international tournament after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games, Vijender gave a commanding performance.

The Indian pugilist, who fights in the middle-weight division (75kg), decided to compete in the light-heavyweight category (81kg) at the Arafura Games and test the level of competition.

Up against the heavily-built western Australian boxer, Vijender got off to a great start taking a 5-2 lead in the first round. The 25-year-old then dominated proceedings and never let the Australian get back in the game.

“He is a strong and powerful boxer. My focus was was to win the bout,” said Vijender.

He will next face Rapira Sam of New Zealand Thursday.

The other Indian in the fray Tuesday was Meena Rani, who beat Ramela Dina of Indonesia
in the light-weight category.
