Vijender, Akhil to lead India’s challenge at World Boxing Championships

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS) Olympic bronze medallist Vijender and Akhil Kumar will spearhead India’s challenge in the World Boxing Championships to be held in Milan Sep 1-12.
Nine boxers were selected after trials at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. The selection committee decided against sending boxers in the 69 kg and +91 kg categories after they felt that India’s chances are slim in these two sections.

Vijender will carry India’s hope in the 75 kg category while Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Olympic quarterfinalist Akhil Kumar will take part in the 57 kg.

Another Beijing Games quarterfinalist Jitender Kumar will be India’s top bet in the 54 kg section while 18-year-old World Youth Champion Nanao Singh will fight it out in the 48 kg. Nanao also won a silver in the Asian Championships in Zuhai, China.

Suranjoy Singh, India’s lone gold medallist at the Asian Championships, will take part in the 51 kg section. Asian silver medallist Jai Bhagwan (60 kg) and bronze medal winner Dinesh Kumar (81 kg) along with Manpreet Singh (91 kg), who won a silver at an international meet in Russia this month, and Manoj Kumar (64 kg) were also included in the team.

More than 700 boxers from 100 countries will take part in the championships in Milan.

The team: Nanao Singh (48 kg), Suranjoy Singh (51 kg), Jitender Kumar, Akhil Kumar(57 kg), Jai Bhagwan (60 kg), Manoj Kumar (64 kg), Vijender Singh (75 kg), Dinesh Kumar (81 kg), Manpreet Singh (91 kg).
