Vignesh upsets Gajjar, Yuki breezes into ITF quarters
June 8th, 2011 - 9:26 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 8 (IANS) Vignesh Peranamallur shocked second seed Rohan Gajjar 6-3, 7-5 to enter the quarterfinals of $15,000 ITF men’s singles at the DLTA complex here Wednesday.
Vignesh came up with a solid game against Gajjar, who played with a stomach tear.
Vignesh, who had defeated Gajjar only once in 2008 on clay in their previous five meetings, broke him in the seventh and the ninth games to go up a set.
Gajjar, serving strong and with a big forehand, came back strongly in the second set to lead 4-2 but dropped his serve immediately to even things out. He then dropped his serve in the 12th game to lose the set and the match after nearly a two-hour battle.
In contast, top seed Yuki Bhambri had it easy against Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash, beating him 6-2, 6-1. Jayaprakash, with a powerful serve and groundstrokes, lacked the patience to construct points and made a stream of errors in an attempt to outpace the top speed.
Yuki, on the other hand, played fluently and showed no discomfort in chasing the odd volleys. Breaking Jayaprakash in the first and fifth game, Yuki cruised to a 4-1 lead only to drop his serve in the next. He, however, reeled off the next two games to take a set lead.
He tightened his grasp in the second set, conceding just a game, as Jayaprakash went through the motions.
A confident Yuki, who is coming back after suffering from tendonitis in both knees, said is feeling no pain and is looking forward to his match against eighth seed Karunuday Singh, who defeated Abhijeet Tiwari 6-4, 6-2.
“I am feeling good. I went after the volleys with ease. I am looking forward to my match against Karunuday. He has improved a lot, I know I have to be aggressive from the start and put him on backfoot,” Yuki said.
In other second round matches, seventh-seeded Vijayant Malik defeated Vignesh Veerabadran 6-3, 6-2 while fourth-seeded N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth dispatched Ashwin Vijayragavan 6-1, 6-4.
Third seed Ranjit Virali Murugesan brushed aside Sweden’s Lucas Renard 6-2, 6-3 to enter the last eight.
