Victory over Kenya will give us confidence: Bagai

New Delhi, March 7 (IANS) A delighted Canadian skipper Ashish Bagai Tuesday hoped their five-wicket victory over Kenya will spur his team to do better in the remaining matches of the World Cup.

Canada registered only their second victory in a World Cup. The team’s first win came against Bangladesh in 2003 and Bagai said he feels fortunate to be part of both the victories.

Bagai, whose 132-run fourth wicket stand with Jimmy Hansra took Canada to safety from a precarious 48 for three, said the top order needs to be consistent with the bat. He was satisfied with the performance of his bowlers.

“We have been disappointed with our batting against Zimbabwe and Pakistan but today after losing early wickets we pulled ourselves in the powerplay. However, I am disappointed with batting in the first half,” Bagai said.

“Our bowlers did a fantastic job. The win has a given us a bit of confidence. Hopefully, this game will give us the spark to do well in the remaining matches and we will end our World Cup on a high.”

Bagai was lavish in his praise for Hansra.

“We were fortunate that the run rate was never an issue with us. The wicket was not easy to bat on but if you stick around you can get your way through. Thankfully, I had Jimmy at the other end and we saw it through.

“Jimmy is someone who has not played much for Canada. But he put in a lot of hard work in the last 9-12 months. As a captain you feel good if you see a player working hard. He certainly deserves it.”

Bagai said the pitch was not the spinning track they expected it to be.

“The pitch was not spinning much, it rather had a low bounce. In fact, it became rather easy to bat later on when the ball stopped moving around,” he said.
