Vettori set to be Black Caps’ captain beyond 2011 World Cup
December 26th, 2010 - 6:28 pm ICT by ANIAuckland, Dec 26(ANI): Daniel Vettori is reportedly set to continue as New Zealand captain beyond next year’s 50-over World Cup in the Indian subcontinent.
According to the New Zealand Herald, Vettori has accepted the need to continue in his current role as he forges a new relationship with new coach John Wright.
The 31-year-old had earlier indicated that he would give up the leadership after the World Cup, which begins in February.
He is believed to be happy that Wright has been appointed rather than having to build a relationship with someone new less than two months from the crucial tournament.
Vettori’s captaincy role is also expected to be more manageable with his reduced selection responsibilities.
He has been moved from official panelist to ‘consultant’, still with a big say on team selection during tours.
The New Zealand team, which was thrashed 0-5 in a one-day series against India, has recently faced an embarrassing slide in one-day cricket, where they have equalled their second worst one-day run of 11 straight defeats.
They were earlier beaten 0-4 in a five-match ODI series by Bangladesh in October.
The Black Caps’ last win came in the first match of a Sri Lanka tri-series, against India, on August 10. (ANI)
