Vasco da Gama’s Edmundo prepares farewell match

Rio de Janeiro, March 21 (IANS) Vasco da Gama club legend Edmundo participated in one of his last team practice sessions as the 40-year-old came out of retirement to receive an official farewell match.

During Vasco da Gama’s team practice Tuesday, Edmundo scored twice during his side’s 4-3 victory in a team scrimmage, Xinhua reported.

Edmundo began his career with Vasco da Gama in 1991. He appeared in 129 games for Vasco, scoring 79 goals. He helped the team win the 1992 Rio de Janeiro state championship as well as the 1997 Brazilian Championship.

In Brazil, he also played for Flamengo, Corinthians, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, Santos and Fluminense. Internationally, he played for Japanese clubs Tokyo Verdy and Urawa Red Diamonds as well as Italy’s Napoli and Fiorentina.

Edmundo will play in his final game as a professional against Ecuador’s Barcelona in a friendly at Vasco da Gama’s Sao Januario stadium March 28.
