Vasco da Gama continue unbeaten run in Rio Cup

Rio de Janeiro, March 12 (IANS) Vasco da Gama continued with their undefeated streak in the state championship of Brazil, Rio Cup after a 3-0 demolition of Madureira in the third round.

With Vasco due to play Paraguay’s Libertad in the Libertadores Cup March 14, the coach, Ricardo Gomes decided to field a mixed team of reserve players, Xinhua reported.

Vasco took a while to settle in the game as the first half remained scoreless.

In the second half, Juninho Pernambucano, Felipe and Allan scored a goal apiece to secure the team’s victory. Vasco da Gama remain in first place of Group A with 7 points with two wins and a draw.

After losing to Fluminense in the finals of the Guanabara Cup, Vasco will be forced to win the Rio Cup if they are to have a chance of winning this year’s Rio de Janeiro state title.

In the next round of play, the team will face cross-town rivals Botafogo March 18.
