Arsenal London, Dec 11 (IANS) Robin van Persie hit a sensational volley to gift Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Everton on their 125th anniversary in the Premier League.

The Dutch striker caught Song’s accurate overhead pass and delivered a stinging left-footed drive from the edge of the box to seal the win, putting the home team fourth in the league table here Saturday.

The Gunner’s leading striker, who had netted 15 times in as many games this season, also moved closer with his 33rd league goal of the season to Alan Shearer’s record of 36 in a single calendar year, Xinhua reported.

With the victory on their birthday, Arsenal leapfrogged Chelsea, who will face first-placed Manchester City Monday. This is the first time this season that the Gunners have got into the top four after their awful start to the campaign.

Boosted by two goals each from Nani and Rooney, Manchester United returned to winning ways after a convincing 4-1 victory over Wolves.

Ferguson’s team now consolidated their second-place, five points clear of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have played two games less and will meet Stoke Sunday.

Elsewhere, Luis Suarez scored the winner to propel Livepool past Queens Park Rangers with a 1-0 victory, climbing to sixth in the table.
