Arsenal London, Mar 13 (ANI): Veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has said that he will not back down on the decision to retire.

Van der Sar (40) gave a man-of-the-match performance as Manchester United dumped Arsenal out of the FA Cup to progress to the last four.

But despite his outstanding form and boss Alex Ferguson’s attempts to persuade him to stay on - the Old Trafford No1 still intends to quit, The Sun reports.

Asked whether he would consider a U-turn, Van der Sar said: “No, definitely not.”

A goal in each half from Fabio and Wayne Rooney sealed a 2-0 victory as Arsenal suffered their third cup exit in a fortnight.

Van der Sar said recent defeats in the Premier League meant it was important to stay in the hunt for as much silverware as possible.

“I think we played quite well. We got our goals, luckily I pulled off a couple of saves and we defended well. It was important of course because we lost to Chelsea and Liverpool so the gap in the league is now non-existent,” he said.

Ferguson said: “He is a fantastic goalkeeper. We just wish he was 21 rather than coming up to 41 but nature catches you eventually in life.” (ANI)
