AC Milan The Hague (Netherlands), Feb 14 (IANS) Former football coach of the Dutch national side Marco van Basten was unveiled as the new coach of Dutch Eredivisie club Heerenveen, on a two-year deal starting July 1.

Van Basten Monday succeeded Ron Jans, whose contract at Heerenveen was not extended. It is his first job as a coach in three years.

“I am very happy to be here. We had some good talk and that gave me confidence. I like Heerenveen, and I think I am going to have a good time here,” Van Basten was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Heerenveen are currently in third place in the Eredivisie and have qualified for the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup.

In 2011, Van Basten was one of the candidates to become technical director at Ajax. But he cancelled his candidacy himself. Last year, he was also close to becoming coach of Sporting Portugal.

The 47-year-old is considered one of the best Dutch players ever. He led the Dutch team to the European title in 1988 and, among other trophies, he captured the Europa Cup (1989, 1990) and the Intercontinental Cup (1989, 1990) with AC Milan.
