nadalSep 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) With the rains delaying the final of the US Open by one day, it looked like Novak Djokovic had the perfect edge in the clash against Rafael Nadal. In what was slated to be a historical final for Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard ensured that Novak Djokovic’s momentum, after the win over Roger Federer in the semifinal, was broken and he did it in his signature style. The audience at the Arthur Ashe Stadium were treated to one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament between two of the most entertaining and talented players in the world. Finally, Rafael Nadal emerged as the winner of the match and won his first US Open trophy. With the win the Spanish tennis sensation becomes the third youngest player to complete the career grand slam and the 7th tennis player in history to achieve the feat.

The match, however, was not without drama. Novak Djokovic put up a brave fight against the bulldozing force of Rafael Nadal and also gave him his first loss of set in the tournament. Novak Djokovic had also beaten Rafael Nadal on all three previous encounters and the win, therefore, meant a lot more to the Spaniard than just the trophy. With a win at the US Open, Rafael Nadal has also silenced some of his critics who have doubted his ability to perform on the hard courts.

In the other finals of the US Open, Kim Clijsters claimed the winners trophy in the women’s singles. In the men’s doubles M Bryan and B Bryan won the hard fought game against the Indian pair of R Bopanna and A Qureshi.
