The players on the court started the fight and it soon spread to those on the bench. The organizers of the game have been criticized for failing to keep order on the court as the game was going on. The game was abandoned and when the American players were heading to the locker room, the Chinese fans threw plastic bottles and other things on them.
The game was between the visiting Georgetown team and the Bayi Rockets. The Georgetown team is currently on a tour in China where they plan to promote goodwill.
The coach of the collegiate team expressed his regret at the incident. Coach John Thompson III told CNN that, “Tonight, two great teams played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams. We sincerely regret that this situation occurred.”
An amateur video of the clashes has been posted on the Internet. Chinese social media users who have seen the video have criticized the Rockets players for the incident.
