Upcoming Australian cricketer Ferguson injured
October 7th, 2009 - 4:48 pm ICT by ANIJohannesburg, Oct. 7 (ANI): One of Australia’s brightest young batsmen, Callum Ferguson, has torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) for the second time in five years, and has flown home to Adelaide to have the severity of it assessed.
Earlier, Ferguson was ruled out of the under-19 World Cup in 2004 after being involved in a collision with his batting partner during a warm-up game in Bangladesh.
This time the 24-year-old has wrenched the knee joint as he fielded a ball towards the end of New Zealand’s innings in the Champions Trophy final that was played on Monday at the Centurion here.
He was able to walk off the field and was prepared to bat down the order, but the severity of the injury was such that he was advised to stay back in the dressing room by the medical staff.
‘He was very worried about it at the time because he’s had a history of ACL problems, he’s actually torn it before,’ captain Ricky Ponting said.
‘He was going to bat today if absolutely required but he was probably going to bat no higher than nine. Full credit to him, he had his bat and gloves out ready to go if he was needed. We won’t probably know [until the scans], but it didn’t look that good,’ Ponting added.
Since making his ODI debut, Ferguson has made 599 runs at an average of 46.08.
Ferguson is not the only medical worry. Fast bowler Peter Siddle complained of shortness of breath and a racing heartbeat towards the end of his 10 overs. Full of aggression and effort as always, he claimed 1-30 but conceded 12 of those runs in his final over as he pushed himself to the limit. (ANI)
