Umar Gul hopes Pak will whitewash Test series against New Zealand

Wellington, Jan 14(ANI): Pakistan’s opening bowler Umar Gul has said his team will try to whitewash the Test series against New Zealand.

Unable to hold international matches at home due to security concerns and beset by corruption allegations, Pakistan have not won a Test series since defeating the West Indies in early 2007.

“We will try to win the series not only 1-0, but 2-0,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Gul, as saying.

He said the Pakistan squad was taking confidence from two things- first, the emphatic manner of their 10-wicket win in Hamilton earlier this week, and second, their record in Wellington.

“I just heard last night at dinner that we have never lost here, and we’ll try to continue the same thing,” Gul said.

After draws in 1973 and 1985, Pakistan beat New Zealand by an innings and 12 runs in 1994, seven wickets in 2003 and 141 runs in 2009.

Despite bowling on an unresponsive wicket, Gul and left-armer Wahab Riaz were at the Black Caps the whole time in Hamilton. Gul said he and his teammates enjoy playing the Kiwis.

“Myself, I am bowling 140-plus [kmh] and Wahab Riaz is bowling 145-plus, so I think we are a bit faster than New Zealand,” he said.

The 26-year-old said he expects more bounce and sideways movement from the Basin pitch in Wellington, where Pakistan plays the second and final test against New Zealand, starting January 15. (ANI)
