Umar Akmal’s finger injury a ‘genuine’ problem: Intikhab
March 13th, 2011 - 4:30 pm ICT by ANIPallekele, Mar 13(ANI): Pakistan cricket team manager Intikhab Alam has rejected the popular impression that Umar Akmal could be feigning an injury again.
Umar, who was expected to replace underperforming wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal in the remaining World Cup matches, missed yet another training session at Pallekele due to a finger injury.
The timing of his injury raised suspicions, as Umar was earlier accused of feigning a back injury last year when Pakistan were planning to drop his elder brother Kamran after his poor show behind the stumps in the Sydney Test. However, Intikhab dismissed the speculations that Umar could be faking the finger injury.
“It is a genuine problem. He did bruise his finger and though there is no fracture, the pain is there,” The News quoted Intikhab, as saying.
When asked whether Umar would keep the wickets for Pakistan against Zimbabwe, the manager said: “We haven’t taken a decision yet… The thing is that he bruised his right index finger two days back and it is painful which is why he can’t wear the ‘keeping gloves.”Intikhab said Umar would have to sit out of the match against Zimbabwe if he fails to recover in time, and then Kamran will have to be retained as the wicketkeeper.
“In such a scenario, we won’t have any other choice,” he added. (ANI)
