Chennai, July 21 (IANS) Karnataka’s Umadevi Nagaraj regained her National ladies billiards title after a three-year lapse when she defeated defending champion Meenal Thakur of Maharashtra 77-45, 76-61, 75-34 in the final here Thursday.

Umadevi, the 46-year old from Bangalore, played with confidence after she opened the best-of-five, 75-up final with a break of 30 and never looked back.

The 32-year old Meenal from Mumbai, who had enjoyed tremendous success in the previous two National championships when she won the double of snooker and billiards titles, appeared rather tentative in the face of Uma Devi’s strong start, and faded away.

Umadevi posted breaks of 16 and 25 to take the second frame and then closed the match with a run of 32 in the third while Meenal’s best effort was a 22 in the second.

In the semi-finals, Meenal won a tense match against Chitra Magimairaj (Karnataka) 22-75 (38), 75-69 (34), 75(57)-26, 66-76, 75-68, while Umadevi eased past the inexperienced sub-junior player Keerath Bhandaal (Delhi) 76-67, 76(42)-38, 75-23.

Keerath, however, beat Chitra 07-52, 50-21, 51-47 to finish a creditable third in the championship.
