Tucker Murphy Of Bermuda Represents His Nation In 2010 Winter Olympics

murphyFeb 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Tucker Murphy, the cross country skier from Bermuda was the sole representative from his country to bear the flag on the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics 2010 Vancouver. Previously, it was reported that he would be accompanied by Bermuda skeleton slider Patrick Singleton. Patrick Singleton failed to make it to qualified group of players to compete for the skeleton slider game in Winter Games 2010. The Bermuda Olympic Association President Judy Simons declared that their plea to the International Skeleton Federation to invite Patrick Singleton to the Olympic ceremony has been turned down. If Patrick Singleton was allowed to attend the game then it would have been his fourth presence in the Olympic games.

Therefore, Friday’s ceremony which was held at the BC Place downtown Vancouver at 6PM saw the lone 28 year Oxford University student who is a biologist also, bearing the flag of his nation. He is the single hope for his Nation to gain a medal from the Winter Games 2010 which has 82 countries participating for 86 events.

Although born in US, Tucker Murphy has been trying to build up his place in Bermuda which honored him with the prestigious award of being the Rhodes Scholar in 2005.This will be Tucker Murphy’s first Olympic appearance and according to sources he has been preparing for the biggest competition of his life for many months. He has been training with the University of Vermont’s Cross Country team. Tucker Murphy has previously qualified, in the last spring for the maiden Winter Games in Europe. All the hope is now pinned on the skier who will take on the game on Monday.
