Trott stars as England win Adelaide ODI against Australia to stay in series
January 26th, 2011 - 7:16 pm ICT by ANIAdelaide, Jan 26(ANI): England batsman Jonathan Trott scored a century on Wednesday to guide his team to a 21-run win in the fourth ODI against Australia in Adelaide.
Trott’s 102 from 126 balls formed the basis of England’s 299-8, during which Paul Collingwood became the first Englishman to score 5,000 ODI runs.
Chasing 300 to win, Australia managed 278-7 in their 50 overs, the Age reports.
Australia’s top order again faltered, with only opening batsman Shane Watson (64 from 72 balls) being the exception.
Watson received slight support from opening partner Brad Haddin (20) and captain Michael Clarke (15).
Watson’s dismissal in the 24th over brought the score to 116-4, and signalled the beginning of the end for the Australians.
Cameron White (44 from 64 balls) and David Hussey (28 from 34 balls) attempted a rescue mission and put on 59 runs for the fifth wicket.
However, they could not keep up with the ever-increasing required run rate, and both fell in the space of three overs.
A late rally by Steve Smith (46 not out) and Brett Lee (39 not out) was not enough for the home side.
Earlier in the day, England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss for the fourth game in succession and elected to bat first.
Trott led the way for England and joined in an important 113-run partnership with opener Matt Prior (67 off 58), which laid the platform for a winning score.
The victory saw England reduce their series deficit to 3-1 ahead of the fifth ODI at the Gabba in Brisbane on January 30. (ANI)
