Trishul, Chikka best Indians at Asian Amateur golf
September 30th, 2011 - 9:35 pm ICT by IANSSingapore, Sep 30 (IANS) It was a mixed day for the Indian contingent as Trishul Chinappa and Seenapa Chikkrangappa were the best placed at tied 35th after the second round of the Asian Amateur Golf championships here at the Singapore Island Golf and Country Club.
Angad Cheema (71-79), 19th overnight slipped to 56th following a round of 79.
Chikka, the national champion, dropped from 27th to 35th with a round of 74 after his first round 72. Honey Baisoya starting from tenth tee shot had an even par 72 to make up for his first round 76 for a total of 148. Baisoya was up to 47th from 65th. Khalin Joshi moved up from 65th to 56th with a 74 and a total of 150. Abhijit Chadha carded 75 in the second round after his first round 74 for a total of 149 and fell from 49th to 52nd.
Trishul made the best move up among Indians from 49th to 35th. Baisoya and Chinappa had the best rounds from among the Indians with 72 each.
New Zealand’s Ben Campbell took a three-shot lead into the third day after shooting a bogey-free round of 66. His round was joint lowest in the 120-man field and included four birdies and an eagle, taking him to 11-under for the tournament.
The 20-year-old Campbell has the defending champion, Hideki Matsuyama (71) and the winner of the Australian Boys Amateur, Cameron Smith (69) chasing him. Matsuyama is at six-under in tied fifth place, while Smith is seven-under in third place. Kenneth Christian of Malaysia is three-under through 15 holes and is at eight-under, but with three holes to play.
Home favourite Lam Ziqhun also leapt back into contention with a superb 66 of his own.
A two hour early morning rain delay meant 30 players, 10 flights of three, were unable to finish. The final cut, currently projected at 6 over, will not be made until all second rounds are finished Saturday.
The winner of the tournament will receive an invitation to compete in the 2012 Masters Tournament. In addition to that, the winner and the runners-up will be exempted from the final qualifying of 2012 The Open Championship.
